Originally from France, Anne Laporte is a Makeup Artist living and working in San Francisco. Back in France, she studied psychology and social sciences but when she moved in the US, with her husband
Jean-Marc Denis in 2013, she decided to focus on her passion: Beauty & Makeup.
She's funny, kind and honest. Her story is inspiring and she agreed to share it with us.
Anne and Jean-Marc are also the best neighbors ever! I love sharing board game nights + margaritas with them :)
Can you describe your path to becoming a makeup artist?
My professional path is quite unusual. I first studied psychology but I ended up into the commerce field to pay my studies. Then this student job, which was supposed to be temporary, became part of my career.
After 7 years, sick of commerce, I decided to follow a completely different path. I started my studies again, during night classes, in order to be graduated in social sciences and human resources. Shortly after my graduation, my husband and I moved to San Francisco.
I immediately knew that working in human resources, without experience, would be really hard, not to mention that the work legislation is different in the US. My husband pushed me to get into the makeup industry since it's one of my passions. Plus, I spent a lot of time watching videos to train myself, learn new techniques and improve my self-taught skills. That's how everything had started.
I don’t think you need makeup to be beautiful, but sometimes it gives a little something you need to be confident, and that's the thing that can change someone."
What does your everyday job involve exactly?
So basically, my job is to make up people. There's plenty of occasions to get makeup on: weddings, portraits, photoshoots for photographers, special events... At the moment, I mainly focus on making up professional models for photo shooting (magazines, portfolios...).
The goal is to enhance the beauty of the figure and create dream. I love when the makeup is natural.
I usually prepare my photo shooting in advance. I always ask for a photo of the model and a mood board so I can make decisions regarding the 'look' for the D-Day . Sometimes, I practice on friends and even myself.
The day before, I prepare my makeup kit with everything I need.
The D-day, I arrive on the field! Photoshooting can be inside or outside. Sometimes, I don't have a lot of time to set everything up with all my gear (brushes, makeup palette...). A makeup requires between 1 and 2 hours. I feel like a painter with a white canvas, I create and I let the inspiration do its job, because beyond preparation, being a makeup artist requires hard work and imagination.
Can you say that you're doing your dream job?
I am not sure. For me it's still not quite a job, it's something I like very much. I love to 'change people'. Not really change them though, but reveal their beauty. Of course, I don’t think you need makeup to be beautiful, but sometimes it gives a little something you need to be confident, and that's the thing that can change someone.
Do you have another secret passion?
I am not a person who has a BIG unique passion in life. But, I love a multitude of small things. I love to learn new things...
So we can say that my secret passions are to come!
Who was your favorite superhero/villain growing up? Why?
Even if I love Marvel heroes, I have to say that Superman has always been my favorite. Why? Because of my father. Actually, I’ve never read a comic in my entire life, but I love super heroes' movies and tv shows! When I was very young, my father made me watch the Superman series (those with Christopher Reeves) and for a long time, it has been for me the only super hero. He is strong and invincible, he can fly, doing some crazy awesome things with his eyes!! Anyway, he is amazing and uses his superpowers for the greater good, he's a genuine superhero to me. Plus, he is seriously cute!
It took me some time to discover the other super heroes movies like Batman, Spiderman, etc... But my heart remains with Clark Kent!
You know that Batman has his Batcave and Superman his Fortress of Solitude. What's your favorite place/environment to do what you love?
My Batcave would be somewhere I can see the sky, near a big window for example. Looking at the sky has always made me serene. I need to see what happen out there. I don’t really know why though, it's just a feeling.
What superpower do you wish you had and why?
That’s a hard one because when you have superpower, you have also super responsibilities!
I wish I could fly, but that's funny because I’m scared of planes. Plus, I’m sure it would be too cold up there and I hate being cold. But sometimes I dream about flying and it feels so cool!
I also wish I could resuscitate people... But can you imagine the line on my doorway? It's kind of creepy... so nope thanks!
"I am a cape person because the mask would mess up my makeup! ;)"
What is your personal Kryptonite?
*Laughing* Oh! I can’t tell you that! Who wants to reveal his biggest weakness? I have a few though.
I think that my own personal Kryptonite is myself. Everything is possible when you really want it. I really think that I am my only personal enemy. You know, this little person inside yourself who stops you, even before you begin. That same person who always finds excuses like "I have no time", "I’m too busy", "I’m scared", "I can’t "...Of course I can! But...writing it and doing it, are two completely different things.
Also, I’m totally out of service if I’m hungry!
What is your definition of a modern hero?
A modern super hero is, for me, someone who's truly capable of following his/her dream no matter what! Some people have this ability to dare and I am pretty envious of these people. It’s amazing how some people are confident enough to follow their dreams, and THAT is a super ability according to me!
Can you name 3 persons who inspire you everyday?
Your very own heroes.
▸ My husband Jean-Marc. I am very proud of him because he knows what he wants and he does what it takes to realize his dreams. He knows that a 'NO' is not the end of the world, and he dares everything when he thinks it’s worth it. Of course, sometimes he’s scared, but I think regrets scare him more than a possible failure. So he tries again and again.
▸ My grand ma, even if she’s no longer with us for a long time now, is still a huge inspiration for me. She was so wise, kind and patient. She had the ability to always give me good advices and make me take a step back to think. She was everything I would like to be one day, at least I try to work on it!
▸ And finally my best friend. She’s someone who is truly generous and honest. She is really smart and humble too. I admire her a lot because when she wants something she fights for it!
One more thing... Mask or Cape?
I'm a very indecisive person. Can I say both??? I'm the kind of person who thinks that choosing one path is renouncing the other path. So, if I say mask, maybe I’ll regret it later, maybe I'll realize I'm a cape person!!! Ok, let’s go... let’s take some risks. I am a cape person because the mask would mess up my makeup! ;)
